Sanderia Faye Smith

Eckerd College Writers’ Conference: Writers in Paradise, alumna, Sanderia Faye Smith, will have an excerpt of her novel-in-progress, “Mourning Bench,” published in an anthology compiled by The University of Arkansas titled: ARSNICK: The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in Arkansas. The anthology is due out tomorrow, Saturday, July 9, 2011.

Sanderia will also be moderating a panel tomorrow as the AR Civil Rights symposium presents:  “Sit-Ins, Freedom Rides, and Beyond: Direct Action and Civil Rights in 1960s Arkansas” on Saturday, July 9, 2011, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center at 501 West 9th Street in downtown Little Rock. The symposium will be free and open to the public.

An excerpt of Sanderia’s novel-in-progress, “Mourning Bench,” was selected for BEST OF the 2011 Writing the Middle Novel Workshop at the 7th Annual Eckerd College Writers’ Conference: Writers in Paradise and will be published in the 2011 Edition of SABAL later this year.

Angie Jones

Angela Masterson Jones, a three-time alumna of Writers in Paradise (2006, 2007 and 2009) and an Eckerd College PEL Honors student majoring in creative writing, recently received the following recognition:

Her poem “At the Crossing,” which she had workshopped with Professor Emeritus Peter Meinke at the 2009 WIP and published in the 2010 Eckerd Review and Bacopa, was selected by editors at Bennington College to appear online this May in plain china: Best Undergraduate Writing 2010 (http://plainchina.bennington.edu).

Angie’s poem “Chores by the River Ouse,” also published in the 2010 Eckerd Review, received Honorable Mention in the 2010 Writer’s Digest Rhyming Poetry Contest and won First Place in The Lyric magazine’s 2010 College Poetry Contest. It will appear in the winter edition of the magazine (http://www.thelyricmagazine.com).

Congratulations to Athena Sasso (WIP ’08 – ’10) whose short story “The Account in Question” was a finalist in Glimmer Train’s April 2010 contest (Honorable Mention). Her flash fiction piece “Made Me Look” will be published in the 30.1 issue of Existere Journal of Arts and Literature, Fall 2010/Winter 2011.

Congrats to Angie Jones for winning the Writers Alliance of Gainesville Poetry Contest!

This spring, Angie Jones, Eckerd’s Advancement Communications Assistant and Creative Writing/Film Studies student in PEL, was awarded First Place in the Writers Alliance of Gainesville Poetry Contest. Her prizewinning poem “At the Crossing”—which had been workshopped with Professor Emeritus Peter Meinke at the 2009 Writers in Paradise conference—appeared in the 2010 Bacopa anthology and is forthcoming in Eckerd Review.
