Good news from WIP ’06 Alumna, Sonia Quinones:

Sonia Quinones was a recipient of the 2008 Emerging Voices Rosenthal Fellowship for fiction. Emerging Voices is an intensive eight-month program involving writers in the early stages of their literary careers. The program includes one-on-one sessions with mentors, seminars on topics such as editing or working with agents, master classes with a renowned novelist, courses in the Writers’ Program at UCLA Extension and a one-month teaching residency.

As part of the fellowship, Sonia has given readings at the 2008 Los Angeles Times UCLA Book Festival, the Kirk Douglas Theatre, and will be giving a reading at the West Hollywood Book Fair September 2008. An excerpt from Sonia’s novel-in-progress has also been selected to be read at WordTheatre on August 23, 2008.

Sonia won third place in The Atlantic’s 2007 Student Writing Contest for poetry. Her poem, Tio Pancho’s Farewell, was published in The Atlantic’s 2007 Summer Fiction issue. Most recently, she was accepted into the low-residency MFA Creative Writing program at Queens University at Charlotte where she will be studying fiction.

Sonia was a participant in WIP’s 2006 Short Story workshop with Peter Meinke. Her story “Frayed Edges” was also selected as the “Best Of” her workshop and was published in SABAL, Volume 1.

Congratulations, Sonia!
