Congrats to ECWC alum Connie Langhorst who has been accepted into the Red Earth Low Residency MFA Program at Oklahoma City University.  Connie will start attending classes in late December.

Connie has also been busy blogging on behalf of the Pinellas Realtor Organization (PRO) on www.mypinellas.com. Her writing has also been featured in their real estate industry online newsletter, ProView.

Angie Jones

Angela Masterson Jones, a three-time alumna of Writers in Paradise (2006, 2007 and 2009) and an Eckerd College PEL Honors student majoring in creative writing, recently received the following recognition:

Her poem “At the Crossing,” which she had workshopped with Professor Emeritus Peter Meinke at the 2009 WIP and published in the 2010 Eckerd Review and Bacopa, was selected by editors at Bennington College to appear online this May in plain china: Best Undergraduate Writing 2010 (http://plainchina.bennington.edu).

Angie’s poem “Chores by the River Ouse,” also published in the 2010 Eckerd Review, received Honorable Mention in the 2010 Writer’s Digest Rhyming Poetry Contest and won First Place in The Lyric magazine’s 2010 College Poetry Contest. It will appear in the winter edition of the magazine (http://www.thelyricmagazine.com).

Congratulations to WIP Alumna Lori Roy (’06, ’08, ’09).  Lori was recently signed by literary agent Jenny Bent at The Bent Agency. Her novel, BENT ROAD, was bought at auction by Denise Roy at Dutton. BENT ROAD is slated for publication in 2010.

In addition to attending Writers in Paradise, Lori has also studied at the Solstice Summer Writers’ Conference at Pine Manor College.

Congrats to Angie Jones (WIP ’06, ’08, ’09) whose free-verse poem “Berry Picking” and personal essay “A Test of Love” appeared in the 2009 Eckerd Review.

Angie will also have the opportunity to serve as a PEL student representative on the Editorial Board of the 2010 Eckerd Review, the literary review of Eckerd College.

Michael Koryta nominated for 2008 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for best mystery

Some good news from former participant, and most recently, faculty member, Michael Koryta. Michael’s most recent novel, ENVY THE NIGHT, has been nominated for the 2008 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for best mystery.

Envy the Night is one of five finalists, including:

Colin Harrison, THE FINDER

Simon Lewis, BAD TRAFFIC: AN INSPECTOR JIAN NOVEL

Nina Revoyr, THE AGE OF DREAMING

Tom Rob Smith, CHILD 44

Previous winners of the award include Michael Connelly, George Pelecanos, Robert Littell, and Val McDermid. This year’s winner will be announced on April 24 at a private ceremony in the Los Angeles Times building.
