Congrats to Angie Jones for winning the Writers Alliance of Gainesville Poetry Contest!
This spring, Angie Jones, Eckerd’s Advancement Communications Assistant and Creative Writing/Film Studies student in PEL, was awarded First Place in the Writers Alliance of Gainesville Poetry Contest. Her prizewinning poem “At the Crossing”—which had been workshopped with Professor Emeritus Peter Meinke at the 2009 Writers in Paradise conference—appeared in the 2010 Bacopa anthology and is forthcoming in Eckerd Review. Some good news from former participant, and most recently, faculty member, Michael Koryta. Michael’s most recent novel, ENVY THE NIGHT, has been nominated for the 2008 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for best mystery.
Envy the Night is one of five finalists, including:

Previous winners of the award include Michael Connelly, George Pelecanos, Robert Littell, and Val McDermid. This year’s winner will be announced on April 24 at a private ceremony in the Los Angeles Times building.

Great news from WIP Alumna, Angie Jones. Her poem “First Taste of War” was awarded honorable mention in New Millennium Writings’ Winter 2007-08 poetry contest and was published in New Millennium Writings 2008-09.

2006 WIP Alumna K.L. Nappier’s supernatural thriller Bitten wins Dream Realm Awards Horror Division.
The Annual Dream Realm Awards recognizes excellence in the independent electronic press. Kathy’s novel was workshopped by participants in Dennis Lehane’s Novel Workshop of 2006 and published by Double Dragon Publishing in 2007.
Bitten, the sequel to Kathy’s novel Full Wolf Moon, is scheduled for re-release as a paperback through Aisling Press in 2009. Aisling has already published Full Wolf Moon as a paperback, with plans to release it as a hard cover, as well.

WIP ’08 Alumna, Wendy Buffington, has been accepted into the MFA Program for poetry at Ole Miss.
She was also the recipient of the Mason Daly Poetry Award given by the Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College. In addition, Wendy also had two poems (“Reconciliation” and “Through the Cracks”) published in the 2008 Eckerd Review.
Wendy was a participant in the WIP 2008 Poetry workshop with Beth Ann Fennelly. Her poem, “Father”, was selected for Honorable Mention in the “Best Of” the poetry workshop. Beth Ann’s comments about this poem are featured in SABAL, Volume 3.

Good news from WIP ’06 Alumna, Sonia Quinones:
Sonia Quinones was a recipient of the 2008 Emerging Voices Rosenthal Fellowship for fiction. Emerging Voices is an intensive eight-month program involving writers in the early stages of their literary careers. The program includes one-on-one sessions with mentors, seminars on topics such as editing or working with agents, master classes with a renowned novelist, courses in the Writers’ Program at UCLA Extension and a one-month teaching residency.
As part of the fellowship, Sonia has given readings at the 2008 Los Angeles Times UCLA Book Festival, the Kirk Douglas Theatre, and will be giving a reading at the West Hollywood Book Fair September 2008. An excerpt from Sonia’s novel-in-progress has also been selected to be read at WordTheatre on August 23, 2008.
Sonia won third place in The Atlantic’s 2007 Student Writing Contest for poetry. Her poem, Tio Pancho’s Farewell, was published in The Atlantic’s 2007 Summer Fiction issue. Most recently, she was accepted into the low-residency MFA Creative Writing program at Queens University at Charlotte where she will be studying fiction.
Sonia was a participant in WIP’s 2006 Short Story workshop with Peter Meinke. Her story “Frayed Edges” was also selected as the “Best Of” her workshop and was published in SABAL, Volume 1.
