It’s Friday the 13^th, but don’t be scared! There’s still time to apply to the 2010 Eckerd College Writers’ Conference (January 16-24, 2010) in St. Petersburg, Florida.  This is your chance to study in a week-long, intensive workshop, having your own work read and critiqued by our award-winning faculty. Study with the likes of: Tom Franklin, Laura Lippman, Stewart O’Nan, Dennis Lehane, Sterling Watson, Beth Ann Fennelly, Denise Duhamel, Ann Hood, and Michael Koryta.

Want to have a second piece of writing critiqued? Michael Koryta will be doing additional Individual Manuscript Consultations for a limited number of participants for an additional fee. Just check the box on the application. These spots will fill up fast. Priority will be given to applicants based on when his/her application was received.

There will also be morning lectures on craft by Anita Shreve (The Pilot’s Wife and A Change in Altitude), Sheri Reynolds (The Rapture of Canaan and The Sweet In-Between), and Denise Duhamel (Queen for a Day and Ka-Ching!).

We’ll also be dealing with the business side of the industry with a publishing and editing panel featuring: Literary Agent David Hale Smith (DHS Literary), Literary Agent Ann Rittenberg (Ann Rittenberg Literary Agency), Film Agent Amy Schiffman (Intellectual Property Group), Publisher and Co-founder of Akashic Books, Johnny Temple, and Executive Editor with Dutton, Ben Sevier. There’s the business of finding a literary agent which can sometimes seem overwhelming. In a separate session, David Hale Smith will discuss what he’s looking for and the process that follows once you become a client.

Curious about literary magazines and university presses? We’ll also have a session featuring Dr. Richard Matthews. Dr. Matthews is the Director of the Tampa Review and Director of UT Press.

Think that’s it? Far from it. We’ll also have a roundtable session with workshop faculty, a  student reading, evening readings by our faculty, selection of the “Best Of” the conference for publication in our literary magazine, SABAL, evening receptions and more….

We understand that money is a bit tighter than usual for some individuals this year and that’s why we are continuing to offer scholarships based on need and merit.

Nicole Roberge

Congrats to WIP Alumna Nicole Roberge. Nicole’s memoir, HANG IN THERE, WHEREVER “THERE” IS, will be published in 2010 by Chipmunka Publishing.  Based in London, the publisher focuses on both factual and creative literature dealing with mental health disorders.
